Project
OpenBasin Overview
The OpenBasin project began in 2003 as a joint effort by StoneFly Technology and the United States Bureau of Reclamation Provo Area Office. These two organizations worked together in an effort to display real-time water and weather data for entire water basins. While creating and maintaining sites such as ewcd.org and sevierriver.org the process of collecting and displaying the real-time data became increasingly difficult and complicated. Due to varying data sources and varying data recording stations, complexities arose and the process of programming was further complicated. OpenBasin was created in order to standardize and simplify the methods used to receive, store, and display the data in real-time over the internet.
In hopes of improving OpenBasin, to gain additional development help, and from a desire to aid similar organizations with similar needs, OpenBasin was released as open source software in the fall of 2004. Through the combined effort of these two organizations and the effort of volunteer programmers OpenBasin is an ever-growing project with new features and new data sources being added constantly.
OpenBasin's Future
The OpenBasin project will continue to expand and grow by supporting additional methods of gathering data from different data sources and by providing new and easier ways to display this information over the internet. Additional utilities enhancing the power and functionality of OpenBasin will also be added to the OpenBasin project. An OpenBasin XML feed is planned so that not only will OpenBasin display the desired information over the internet, but it will be the means of providing the collected data to other sites in a standard format. In short, the OpenBasin project will continue to grow and develop as the need for new features present themselves. With the support of OpenBasin users and developers the OpenBasin project will continue to become an even more useful and powerful solution for real-time data display.
How to get involved
OpenBasin is the collective work of many computer programmers volunteering their time and working in unison towards a common goal. If you are a computer programmer and would like to help in expanding or refining OpenBasin please contact in order to get commit privileges to the CVS repository at OpenBasin.org.
If you would like to help the OpenBasin project in some other way please contact .
Two other great ways to get involved are to join the mailing list and report bugs you may find when using OpenBasin.
Thank you for your support!
